Rare earths for investors

Four rare earths matter most to this story.

Minas Americas is a magnet-rich rare-earth system, with Nd, Pr, Dy and Tb at the centre of the project's strategic focus. Their four oxides are reported together as MREO.

One family, different economics

TREO is a total. The mix inside it matters.

The rare-earth family comprises the 15 lanthanides together with scandium and yttrium. Deposits and process streams can contain mixtures, but neither the family definition nor analytical presence means that all 17 will be recovered or sold.

Four magnet rare-earth oxides—Nd, Pr, Dy and Tb—are reported together as MREO. The measure identifies the magnet-relevant part of the basket, but it does not establish recovery, separation or what a customer would pay for. Scandium is treated separately in the historical reporting context; promethium is not a natural commercial mineral product.

The bottleneck tightens downstream.

China's share rises from 60% of magnet rare-earth mining to 91% of refining and 94% of sintered permanent-magnet production.

The concentration is greatest where mined material becomes separated products and finished magnets used in EVs, wind turbines, industrial motors, AI data centres, medical, aerospace and defence systems.

From assay to market

Finding an element is only the first step.

Investors should ask how the element moves from a head assay to a recovered, separated and customer-qualified product.

  1. 01Presence

    An analytical method identifies an element in sampled material.

  2. 02Mobilisation

    A test transfers some material into solution under stated conditions.

  3. 03Recovery

    A reproducible mass balance measures the proportion recovered.

  4. 04Separation

    Processing produces controlled individual or grouped streams.

  5. 05Product

    A material reaches a specification, scale and market.
